Case Study: Hydrokinetic River Turbines

A Boston-based venture group employed Sigma Design to develop a pilot project to capture alternative energy via a renewable energy hydrokinetic generator. The project required us to create a fully-submerged, run-of-river device that could generate electricity within a six-month timeframe. Other challenges included marine-submersion anti-fouling prevention, hydrodynamic balancing, and power-generating electronics.

Sigma Design was able to design, manufacture, and install a one-meter 3 kW run-of-river electric generator, which is still running north of New Orleans in the Mississippi River.
